The Tinikling is considered the national folk dance of the Philippines. It involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other while one or more dancers step over and in between the poles in a dance.
The dance originated during the Spanish colonial era. Legend says it imitates the movement of tikling birds walking between grass stems, running over tree branches, and avoiding the traps set by rice farmers.
Tinikling is performed during fiestas and cultural celebrations. It symbolizes grace, agility, and harmony with nature. The dance has become a symbol of Filipino identity worldwide and is taught in schools as part of cultural education.
