Singkil is a royal dance from the Maranao people of Lanao. The dance takes its name from the bells worn on the ankles of the dancer. It depicts the story of Princess Gandingan who was caught in the middle of an earthquake and saved by forest spirits.
Singkil originated in the Lake Lanao area of Mindanao. It is derived from the epic Darangen, which is included in UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The dance was traditionally performed only by royalty.
Singkil represents grace, nobility, and elegance. It is a living piece of the Maranao epic tradition and showcases the ornate costumes and royal heritage of the Muslim Mindanao culture. The crossing bamboo poles represent trees falling during an earthquake.
