About This Dance

Maglalatik is a mock war dance from Binan, Laguna that dramatizes the fight over coconut meat (latik). Male dancers attach coconut shells to their bodies and perform a choreographed battle, slapping the shells to create rhythmic percussion.

History & Origins

The dance originated in Binan, Laguna as part of the patronal feast of San Isidro Labrador. It was a way for farmers to celebrate their harvest and mock-battle with neighbors over the prized latik (coconut residue).

Cultural Significance

Maglalatik is a form of ritual combat dance performed in honor of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers. It demonstrates Filipino ingenuity in turning simple materials (coconut shells) into percussion instruments and reflects the importance of coconut in Filipino culture.
