Itik-Itik is a mimetic folk dance from Surigao, Mindanao. The dance imitates the movements of a duck (itik) — waddling, splashing water, and flapping wings. It is said to have been improvised by a young woman named Kanang.
According to legend, Kanang was asked to dance at a baptismal party but had no dance prepared. She improvised by imitating the ducks she saw on her way to the celebration, and her audience loved it so much that they joined in and the dance became a tradition.
Itik-Itik represents Filipino spontaneity, creativity, and joy. It is a celebration of the natural world and demonstrates how ordinary Filipinos can create art from everyday observations. The dance is popular at fiestas and school cultural programs throughout the Visayas and Mindanao.
